The Sonnenhaus

First mentioned in 1823, the Sonnenhaus is today a revitalised country house with the character of an old farmhouse. Step by step, and with plenty of work done by ourselves, we have given the buildings a new purpose while preserving much of the original structure.

The old house’s thick walls keep the rooms pleasantly cool in summer and warm in winter. They also partly block mobile phone signals, and Wi-Fi is not available in every corner of the house. We see this as a little luxury: the chance to be offline now and then, slow down and enjoy some peace and quiet.

Plenty of nature

The Sonnenhaus comes with five hectares of land, including woodland, an orchard meadow and a garden. We look after the land ourselves and take care of what grows and thrives around the house.

Old fruit trees, vines, culinary herbs, vegetables and berries are all part of the landscape. Whatever the season brings is harvested, preserved and enjoyed. The surroundings are always changing: spring brings new beginnings, summer is lush and abundant, autumn is harvest time, and winter brings a welcome quietness.

We also try to use the resources around the house thoughtfully. The swimming pool is heated with solar energy. Guests arriving with an electric car can use our private EV charging station, with charging costs based on actual consumption.

Deeply rooted

As hosts, we feel closely connected to the region Steirisches Vulkanland. We grew up here, and this is where we live and work. We know the region from everyday life, from being involved in local community life and from our work in regional development.

We value the people, businesses and products that shape this landscape, and we consciously choose to work with local partners. We are happy to share this connection with our guests – through personal recommendations and tips for places and experiences we enjoy ourselves.

We see the Sonnenhaus as a starting point for discovering the many different sides of the region. Places such as the Zotter Chocolate Theatre and Gölles Vinegar Manufactory are examples of pioneering businesses that have helped shape the character of the region with their innovative ideas.
