We feel right at home on holiday.
Breakfast
Whether in winter in the old Press’ or in summer on the covered terrace: breakfast is the most important meal of the day for us. The ingredients for our breakfast are carefully selected: homemade treats from our team, fresh pastries from the organic bakery, Styrian dairy products, fruit and juices from our own garden, and eggs from free-range hens in the neighbouring village. We complement this regional selection with organic teas from Sonnentor and Fairtrade coffee from Zotter.
Included when staying in our double rooms. Available on request when staying in one of our holiday apartments (charged extra).
Cooking in our holiday apartments
The kitchens in our holiday apartments are fully equipped for cooking together. For fresh ingredients we recommend a visit to the weekly farmers’ markets in Feldbach and Fehring or the many culinary shopping experiences along #route66. Numerous producers welcome visitors directly at their production site. We happily share our private favourites.

Picnic in the country
It doesn’t take much to enjoy a relaxing day on holiday: a blanket, a well-stocked picnic basket and a favourite spot under the open sky are the best ingredients. There are many special places around the Sonnenhaus where we love to linger and enjoy a little snack.
A number of local businesses put together lovely picnic baskets to order, making the search for the right provisions a breeze. In the immediate vicinity, we’re happy to recommend the picnic selection from the Vulcano ham factory and the delicious fillings from the Haberl & Fink’s Delikatessen restaurant. Another genuine favourite of ours is a picnic in the vineyard at Kapfenstein Castle.
Archaic cooking
We have a charcoal barbecue in our garden, which is used frequently. We usually have charcoal and firelighters in stock, and barbecue cutlery is kept in the communal kitchen in the courtyard. For barbecue food where you know exactly where it comes from, we recommend steaks or sausages from our trusted butcher.
All round the Sonnenhaus, several fire pits invite you to enjoy a cosy get-together by the open fire. Useful kitchen utensils and wood are provided. Tend the fire and let your thoughts wander. Or have a go at grilling some bread on a stick. Time spent by the campfire gently grounds us and yet gives us so much energy.

Tips from the Sonnenhaus

Juices
Boil a handful of scarlet beebalm flowers in two litres of water for three minutes. Then stir in two kilograms of sugar, one sliced lemon and three decagrams of citric acid. Leave the mixture to stand, covered and in a cool place, in an earthenware pot or bowl for three days. Give it a stir now and then. Strain the syrup and pour it into glass bottles with screw-top lids. Store in a cool, dark place and enjoy before the next flowering season. Serve the scarlet beebalm syrup diluted with water (1:5).

Bread
Winkler Bakery
An organic farm specialising in the cultivation of spelt. Renate Winkler founded her bakery in 2009. The grain is grown around 2.5 km from the Sonnenhaus and is transformed there into delicious baked goods. For many years, the bakery has been providing us with truly delicious treats for the Vulkanland breakfast. Renate Winkler, a certified herbalist, is also known for her cottage garden, through which she is happy to guide guests by prior arrangement.

Spreads
Pumpkin seed spread
Coarsely grind two handfuls of dried pumpkin seeds (a small electric coffee grinder works well for grinding small quantities of various grains). Mix with ¼ kg of farmhouse quark, add a dash of pumpkin seed oil – this gives the spread its lovely green colour. Season with salt, pepper and a little garlic, then stir well. We buy organic pumpkin seeds and pumpkin seed oil from Grain Farm and farmhouse quark from Milchhof Krenn.
