Hiking
The legacy of extinct volcanoes continues to shape the Styrian Volcanic Region to this day. The ‘In the Footsteps of the Volcanoes’ (Spuren der Vulkane) hiking trail network invites you to explore this eventful past over a distance of more than 600 km. In keeping with the motto “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts”, all the daily stages are interconnected. Along the way, the hike through the gentle, feminine landscape also takes you on a journey inward, to your own self.

Sonnenhaus Extra
To ensure a wonderful hiking experience, we have equipped our holiday flats and country rooms with the region’s characteristic orange rucksacks. Hiking maps for the entire ‘In the Footsteps of the Volcanoes’ trail network are available, as is a selection of overview maps for individual day walks and (circular) routes.
If you’re keen to lace up your walking boots but are still looking for the right route, please feel free to ask us: as the lead project manager responsible for the initial implementation of the walking trail network, host Gabi Grandl knows most of the trails better than almost anyone else in the region.
Cycling
We love that feeling of cycling along at a steady pace, watching the landscape roll by and feeling the breeze on our faces. Our guests’ bicycles can be safely stored with us for the duration of their stay. If you fancy a spontaneous cycle ride, you can hire a bike from one of our regional partner businesses, for example in Riegersburg or Bad Gleichenberg.
From the Sonnenhaus, wide cycle paths lead directly into the centre of Feldbach (around 6 km). Along the way, the gentle landscape opens out into the wide Raab Valley. From here, many signposted tours – which can also be accessed via GPS data – invite you to enjoy a cycling adventure.
Sonnenhaus Extra
The Sonnenhaus is an ADFC-awarded ‘Bett+Bike’ accommodation – a certification awarded to particularly cycle-friendly lodgings.
Cycling tip: One of Styria’s best-known cycle routes runs along the Raab: the R11 Raab Valley Cycle Route. For families and leisure cyclists, we recommend following the route downstream to Jennersdorf, stopping for a bite to eat there, and then taking the train back.

Outdoor
There’s a rustling in the undergrowth, a branch snaps – full concentration – and the arrow hits the target! Genuine excitement breaks out on the archery course. Arrows are collected and the journey continues through the forest, in search of the next target. In Vulkanland, there are archery courses at the foot of Riegersburg Castle and in the shade of the Fehring Woods, amongst other places. Please remember to wear suitable footwear!
Riegersburg Castle also offers great opportunities for climbing. The castle rock, visible from afar and towering imposingly, is a popular destination for climbing enthusiasts. The destination is the outdoor seating area of the Burg-Taverne, where all successful climbers proudly ring the bell before enjoying the fantastic view.
